Lake Superior College Foundation Celebrates Historic Year, Elects New Board Officers and Adds New Members

The Lake Superior College Foundation has announced that fiscal year 2019 was the most successful year in the history of the organization, both in terms of funds raised and funds distributed in support of students at Lake Superior College.

The total amount raised in fiscal year 2019 was $1.4 million dollars, the highest annual amount raised by the Foundation. That amount includes financial donations from individual donors and organizations, as well as equipment donations, matched leveraged funds, grants, and other financial awards. The Foundation awarded over $425,000 in direct student support including scholarships, grants, and interest free emergency loans. That is also the highest annual amount ever distributed by LSC Foundation. In addition to direct student support, the LSC Foundation also serves as the fiscal host for the free summer camps for youth; LSC athletic programs, events and fundraisers; and academic and student support programs and initiatives at Lake Superior College.

“Thanks to the generosity of our community and supporters, this past year has been the most successful year in the history of LSC Foundation and we’ve been able to support more students than ever before,” said Daniel Fanning, Executive Director of the LSC Foundation. “For the second year in a row, we’ve had our best year both in terms of fundraising and providing financial support to students. We are so grateful for all the support we receive, from our largest donors including the Ordean Foundation and ALLETE to the grassroots efforts of organizations like the Bong Book Club in Superior and individual students clubs throughout our four campuses, to many of our own employees and alumni who contribute. It all helps support students at Lake Superior College. An increasing number of regional employers and community partners are seeing Lake Superior College and the LSC Foundation as a wise investment because they know we’re helping recruit, train and retain a large portion of our community’s workforce. While we’re energized by the growing numbers and momentum, we know there is still a lot of work to do and a growing need for even more student support. Our talented Board of Directors and staff are prepared to do all we can to build on the success, continue to raise the bar even higher, and continue to help as many students as possible be successful.”

At the July Board of Directors meeting, the Lake Superior College Foundation welcomed two new board members: Kelsey Johnson, President of Iron Mining Association, and Peter DeSutter, Senior Program Manager at AAR Duluth. They have been elected to serve a three-year term.

In addition to adding two new board members, the Board of Directors elected new officers for the upcoming fiscal year, beginning on July 1, 2019. Tom Renier, retired Executive Director of the Northland Foundation and former Chair of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees, was elected as Chair of the Board. Rev. Terese Tomanek, chaplain and employee at Woodland Hills, was elected as vice-chair. Andy Reierson, COO of Flint Group in Duluth, was elected as board treasurer. And, Linda Basara, retired Director of Education at St. Luke’s, was elected as secretary. The 2019/2020 Board will look to build on the success from this past year.
